Catch us if you can! - 19/07/09

Surf Relief 2009 brought out the best racing of the season yet. Under serious pressure series leaders Dan Humble and Rach Pascoe both from Portreath showed their true class, holding off the strong challenges from Robbie Sandbach and Fay Mills of Woolacombe respectively.

Humble looked beaten entering the final Ski leg with Sandbach having a 20m lead. However the determined Aussie ran hard to his craft and paddled well through the break only to appear on the wash of Sandbach by the first can! From then on he clearly drafted well and on getting into the wave zone, pulled out some true skill to pick a runner first and the title was his.

Pascoe however, who had been under pressure at Goldcoast by Jenna Hawkey, and Eva Murphy had a new contender this time. It has been long awaited too by those who have seen her potential at the Woolacombe club. After finally laying her sea swimming fears to rest, Fay Mills came out of the board hot on the heals of leader Pascoe. However a strong swim gave her a slight advantage going into the final Ski leg. The girls seemed too close to call on the way out, then a mistake by Mills cost her the race allowing Pascoe to reach the wave zone first, and run up the beach some 30metres ahead.

Third places this weekend went to Lloyd Rosewell of Pen-y-Bont and Eva Murphy of Woolacombe.

A full series results table will be up on the site this week but again it will be Humble and Pascoe in yellow at stop 3 in Aberavon.
