Murphy and Thomas win Kings Race - 17/09/09

Sun, sand and light offshore winds provided the perfect conditions for the return of this endurance classic. 72 Athletes lined up for the race as individuals, pairs or taplin teams.

Right from the start it was clear that only 1 team could live with the blistering pace set by Garod Thomas (Aberavon) and Rob Sandbach (Woolacombe) and that consisted of Nick thorn, Mark Ressel, and Keith Gammon!

Meanwhile in the women’s race there was another duel going on between local girls Eva Murphy and Ellie Parker both of Woolacombe. It was Murphy however who appeared to get stronger as the race developed. The gruelling course involved a 1K run, 2.5k Ski paddle, 500Run/500 swim, 1k Board, 500run/500 swim, 2.5k ski and 1 k run.

As the athletes approached the final ski leg, Garod Thomas and Robbie Sandbach were locked together but Thomas opened up a lead of about 40m or so on the tiring Sandbach and he claimed his first Kings Race and series win of the season. Sandbach held on for second with Craig Robinson (Pen y bont) third. Murphy was clear of her rivals by this point and finished strong some 2 minutes ahead of Parker in second place, with Sara Rowe (Portreath) third. Thorn, Ressel and Gammon took the teams race and showed there is still some good racing left in all three of them while the first pair across the line were Michelle Gammon and Georgie Redrup (Woolacombe) Notable youngsters Kirsten Watts (pen y bont) Grace Clark, Lily Nichols and Scoob Lark all performed well showing the more established athletes they will have to watch out next year! The final mention goes to Bob Bunney of Saunton Sands who at the ripe old age of 52 completed the whole race with ease.

This race concludes the Legacy events Elite Iron man and Woman series for 2009, and both Eva Murphy and Rob Sandbach were crowned champions over the 4 race format.
