Legacy Super Teams Off to a Flying Start! - 24/06/10
Sunshine, small surf, an unexpected car accident all added to the excitement at the Goldcoast Oceanfest 2010 opener for this years series.
The question on everyones lips was 'Is Dan Humble fit?'
Race 1 started with the under 18 boys with Freddie Hedger ,Joe Wall and James Bunney getting off to a flying start. It was Hedger who was victorious with Wall second and Hurricane 's Tom Bolt overtaking Bunney for 3rd.. In the Womens race Ellie Psrker dominated for team Thunder with Hollie Hawkey and Fay Mills in hot pursuit. The under 16 girls was won by Josie Williams with Grace Clark 2nd and Mesha Wardman 3rd.
Then to the men. Robbie Sandbach opened up a massive lead on the swim and was nearly caught by youngster George Haynes with Humble left in 3rd spot. Not a familiar sight for regular Legacy viewers.
The second round had Bunney winning the under 18 mens race with Hedger 2nd and Wall 3rd . Josh Newing picked up valuable points in 4th for Team Phantom.
Mesha Wardman won the girls from Josie Williams and Kerstin Watts with Clark in 4th. In the same race and way out in front it was Ellie Parker again this time from Holly Hawkey and older sister Jenna in 3rd.
Now to the mens race 2. Could Sandbach do it again. with the board leg first Dan Humble and Gary sinc got off to a great start . Sandbach closed in on the swim leg but could not catch Humble who raced to victory. Sandbach 2nd and Haynes 3rd.
The twist then came when race organisers announced that the last race would be 'all in'- a mass start. 51 ski's lined up for the double leg and from the shore it was impossible to tell who was going to win. Tim Widdershoven and Humble led off the Ski with the others in hot pursuit. After the board leg Lloyd Rosewell had passed Widdershoven and was right on the shoulder of Humble. Not another upset, surely not?
Humble swam like a dolphin and exited the water with 15 metres clear between himself and the fast catching Sandbach. Rosewell took 3rd, but the 2010 Champion for the 3rd time in a row was Dan Humble captain of Team Phantom Sponsored by Bennett Europe.
Behind them Tom Bolt was leading going into the final Swim leg with Wall, Bunney Hedger in hot pursuit. Hedger swam past Bolt to take the series victory with Joe Wall 2nd and Tom Bolt 3rd. James Bunney finished 4th which was enough to gain 3rd overall on the day.
Finishing 21st overall and ahead of many of the elite men it was Holly Hawkey who snatched vicory. She entered the swim leg with Ellie Parker and they were both chasing sister Jenna down. Parker went past then to her amazement so did Hawkey for an upset. This time Holly was victorious with Jenna 2nd and Parker 3rd.
The Under 16 Girls race was a classic. Any one of 4 athletes could win overall depending on this result. Kerstin Watts showed she gets stronger with every race and tookthis one out with Mesha Wardman sprinting past Josie Williams to take 2nd. The overall points left Wardman and Williams tied equal to share the victory, Watts finished 2nd with Grace Clrk 3rd.
Team honours fittingly went to Hunter Hurricane minus their captain Garod Thomas who along with Nicky Thomas and 'Fast Daps' Rhys Davies missed this on due to an earlier car crash.
Next round is at Woolacombe and will be the famous 'Kings Race' - a 1k run , 800m Board, 300mrun300mSwim, 4K ski 300m run 300m Swim, 800m Board with a 1K run to finish. 5.30 Registartion for a 6.30pm start Taplin Teams from non series competitors welcome £12 on the day!!
